How to Convert PDF to Markdown: Headings, Reading Order, and Scanned Files
Turn a text-based PDF into editable Markdown. Learn how to check reading order, repair headings and tables, and recognize when a scanned document needs OCR first.
Can you convert a PDF directly to Markdown?
Yes, if the PDF contains selectable text. A converter extracts that text and estimates which lines are headings, paragraphs, and lists. Markdown preserves document structure in a plain-text format; it does not reproduce the original page design. A brochure with overlapping captions will need more cleanup than a simple report.
Before converting a long file, try selecting and copying one paragraph in your PDF viewer. If you can only select the whole page as an image, the document probably needs optical character recognition (OCR). Some PDFs combine scanned and text-based pages, so check more than the first page.
Convert a short sample before the whole document
Open StatFlare's PDF to Markdown converter and choose your file. The current limits are 20 MB and 200 pages, with additional limits for very large extracted text. Start with automatic reading order and heading detection. If the PDF requires a password, enter one you are authorized to use.
Compare the first few converted paragraphs with the original. In a two-column paper, the output should finish the left column before continuing on the right. If lines alternate between columns, try the PDF content order setting and compare again. Neither setting can guarantee the right order for every PDF.

Repair the structure that extraction cannot know
A large bold line might be a heading, a running header, or a figure label. Check that your main title uses one # and subsections use consistent ## or ### levels. Remove repeated page headers and footers. Rejoin words split by layout hyphenation only when doing so preserves the intended word.
Treat tables as a separate review step: extracted cells can look like ordinary sentences after their column boundaries disappear. Rebuild a small table manually, or preserve it separately and explain where it belongs. The converter does not extract images; add those and their descriptions yourself when you have permission to reuse them.
What to do when the output is empty or incomplete
An empty result usually means there is no usable text layer. Run OCR in a suitable document application, save the searchable PDF, and convert that version. OCR introduces its own mistakes: check names, decimal points, formulas, and similar-looking characters against the page image.
For a file that exceeds the limits, split it into sensible chapter-sized parts. Keep the originals and review the joins after conversion. A successful extraction means text was found, not that every sentence, citation, or mathematical symbol was captured correctly.
Frequently asked questions
Does StatFlare upload my PDF for conversion? The conversion code reads the selected file in your browser; it does not upload the document to a conversion service.
Can it convert a scanned PDF without OCR? No. This tool extracts existing text and does not perform OCR on page images.
Will Markdown look exactly like my PDF? No. Use it for editable content and document structure, then review complex layouts before publishing or importing into a knowledge base.
