AC Power Consumption Calculator

Estimate how many electricity units your AC uses and what they cost. Use rated electrical input with an average-load assumption, or enter measured session-average power for an inverter or fixed-speed AC.

Inputs

Use electrical input power, not cooling capacity or tonnage.

An assumption for cycling / inverter modulation. Replace with measured data when possible.

For seasonal use, count only days the appliance runs.

Daily usage
Electricity rate

Editable example. Use the rate on your bill.

Currency changes the display unit, not the rate. No exchange-rate conversion is applied.

AC energy & cost

Estimated month running cost

₹1,728.00216 units (kWh) in 30 usage days
Estimated energy and running costs for the usage schedule entered
PeriodUnits (kWh)Cost
Usage day7.2₹57.60
Month (30 usage days)216₹1,728.00
Year (180 usage days)1,296₹10,368.00

Average electrical input: 900 W. The yearly estimate uses 180 operating days; the estimate month is a month of AC use.

Running energy cost only. Fixed charges, taxes, subsidies and utility-specific tariff rules are excluded.

How this calculator works

Use electrical input, not cooling tonnage

A 1.5-ton AC describes cooling capacity, not a fixed electrical draw. Electrical consumption also depends on the model, room heat gain, set temperature and operating conditions. Read electrical input watts from the appliance or use a suitably rated energy meter.

Account for inverter modulation and cycling

Rated power multiplied by an average-load percentage is an approximation of average input, not an official inverter performance curve. In measured mode, average the energy over the full operating session; do not apply a second duty factor to that measurement.

Keep seasonal use separate

The estimate month uses the entered operating days in a month. The yearly total uses the entered operating days per year, which can be lower for seasonal cooling. The two estimates are separate scenarios, so a year is not always twelve full-use months.

Calculation formulas

Average input (W) = Rated input (W) × Average load (%) ÷ 100Daily kWh = Average input (W) × Hours per usage day ÷ 1,000Period energy cost = Daily kWh × Usage days × Rate per kWh

Worked example

Illustration: 1,500 W rated input at 60% average load gives 900 W. Eight hours uses 7.2 kWh per usage day. At an example rate of ₹8/kWh and 30 usage days, that is 216 kWh and ₹1,728 in energy charges. These are assumptions, not a tariff or a promised AC consumption figure.

Understanding the estimate

All prefilled powers, usage patterns and rates are editable examples. This tool runs locally in your browser. Energy-only estimates are not complete electricity bills, and comparisons are scenarios rather than guaranteed savings.

Frequently asked questions

How much electricity does a 1.5-ton AC use per hour?

Tonnage alone cannot determine it. Enter the model’s electrical input and an average-load assumption, or measured average power. For example, a measured average of 900 W means about 0.9 kWh for an hour of operation.

Does an inverter AC always run at its rated power?

No. Inverter input can change with cooling demand, and fixed-speed compressors cycle on and off. Measured session-average input is preferable to assuming maximum rated power all day.

Is the result my complete electricity bill?

No. It estimates the AC’s energy charge at the entered rate. Household consumption, slab crossings, fixed charges, taxes and subsidies may change the actual bill.
